The Grand Renaud Equine Clinic, located in Saint Saturnin (Sarthe, France), only 10 minutes from downtown Le Mans, is bordered by 12 acres of paddocks for horses. This 1800m2 building welcomes all year long externs with various training and from different countries.
The Clinic has a surgical suite, two recovery/induction stalls, a radiology room, treatment rooms, 19 hospitalization stalls and is adequately equipped to perform all aspects of equine medicine and surgery.
The clinic is a referral center for the western region of France and also offers an ambulatory service and the following services: internal medicine, emergency medicine, orthopedics, theriogenology… A wide variety of horses are seen at the clinic including racehorses (both standarbred and thoroughbred), sport horses (dressage, show jumping, eventing), pleasure horses…
The clinic can welcome up to three externs at a time, for periods varying from one week to two months. Due to a high demand, the schedule is often booked weeks in advance so do not hesitate to send your resume and cover letter as soon as possible (especially regarding periods involving the months of February to September).
Free housing is offered on site to externs (room, bathroom and shared kitchen) and externs can be picked up from Le Mans railway station (one hour from Paris using the high speed train TGV). The staff at the Grand Renaud Equine Clinic is bilingual (French/English) so they can accommodate English speaking externs. Supermarkets and shops are located in close proximity to the clinic (2 minutes driving distance, 10 minutes walking distance).
Extern responsibilities during their stay include treatments to hospitalized horses, participation during daily appointments and on call duty. Externs will also help during surgeries. The staff includes 7 veterinarians (ACVS/ECVS/DESV…). The Clinic recently developed specialized surgical techniques such as the use of a new Trocar « GR » for laparoscopies and standing coil embolisation of the carotid arteries to treat hemorrhage from the guttural pouches, and there is also a varied caseload for the externs to chose from, whether it is through ambulatory practice or within the clinic.
